Sechzgerstadion
Grünwalder for Generations
The Sechzgerstadion is a legendary and meaningful stadium. For generations of Münchners, it has been a place of belonging, memory, and collective identity rooted in Giesing. Together with TSV 1860 München e.V., the Stadionkommission, and the City of Munich, we have developed a feasibility study exploring how this beloved stadium can evolve for the club and its fans, the neighborhood, and the city as a whole.
The completed feasibility study marks an important milestone for the future of the Sechzgerstadion: a future home for 1860 that is authentic to the club, meaningful to supporters and connected to Munich.’
More Than 100 Years of Belonging
More than Matchday
More than Matchday
Our shared vision recognizes the Grünwalder Stadion as more than a sports venue: it is part of Giesing’s identity, valued for its distinctive architecture, atmosphere, and fan culture. The proposal explores how the Westkurve’s iconic oval geometry could be reinterpreted, increasing its capacity from 8.000 to over 13.000 spectators and introducing steeper terraces that bring supporters closer to the field and reinforce the stand’s role as the stadium’s atmospheric heart.
It also addresses the realities of a stadium in a densely populated neighborhood, including access and circulation, fire safety, crowd movement, noise and light protection, and matchday transportation. Looking ahead, the vision considers how photovoltaic panels on a continuous roof could support the stadium’s energy needs and potentially supply renewable power to the surrounding neighborhood.
Built on Identity
Beyond the famed football temple, the goal is to create a destination that welcomes the city, supports community life and contributes to Munich every day of the year.’
