Pathé Maastricht

New Take on Nostalgia

Following the success of our Arnhem movie theater, we designed a new cinema for Pathé in Maastricht. Our building, a multipurpose cultural hub, captures the cinematic glamour of the 1920s and 1930s with its classic, formal Modernism.

With our unusually extroverted cinema design, we created a new cultural and social hub for Maastricht’s Sphinx Factory Quarter.

Old meets new

Old meets new

Our new building engages with the old Sphinx Factory, with which it connects directly via the factory’s original arched entrance. We kept the profile of the cinema long and low, preserving the visibility of the monumental 1920s site. With its remarkably open façade, unusual for a cinema, we ensured that our building becomes an active and visible part of the city’s cultural life. By enhancing the functions of lingering, meeting and socializing, we put them at the heart of the cinema experience.

The era of the original Sphinx buildings was also the golden age of cinema – so the Modernism of the factory was a perfect starting point.
