Kalkbyen Franzefoss

Quarry to community

Kalkbyen Franzefoss is a new residential neighborhood in Bærum, just outside Oslo, set on the site of a former limestone quarry. Known for its steep rock faces and natural terraces, the area’s rugged landscape provides a dramatic setting for modern living. While we look to the future – with terraced homes, green public spaces, and a diverse mix of housing – we stay rooted in the site’s geological and industrial past.

Terraced Living

The neighborhood’s design responds directly to its unique terrain. Housing types vary in size and scale, arranged thoughtfully to create a dynamic and inclusive community. The site’s natural rock terraces – fjellhyller – are transformed into shared outdoor spaces, including gardens, playgrounds, and pedestrian pathways. These elevated plateaus connect residents to both nature and each other, while preserving the dramatic landscape that defines the area.

By embracing the site's industrial character, we created a design that is both grounded and forward-looking.
